  8.         summer is brutal. i lie awake every
  9.         night, restless, beads of sweat
  10.         rising on my neck, face, and thighs.
  11.         the heat makes it impossible to
  12.         concentrate, and my thoughts flicker
  13.         like a hummingbird jumping from
  14.         flower to flower. it's the heat that
  15.         keeps me awake, the heat that makes
  16.         me think instensely and unendingly
  17.         about everything that comes to the
  18.         surface from the depths of my brain
  19.         and body. it's the heat that makes
  20.         me want to crawl out of my own
  21.         flesh and become someone else.
  22.         
  23.         when the air above the pavement
  24.         visibly quivers and i can taste the
  25.         grit of the city within my dry
  26.         mouth, i feel dirty. it's the same
  27.         feeling i have when i see my ex
  28.         in the darkness of the club, or
  29.         i hear a song that reminds me of
  30.         the past. i want to run away,
  31.         escape, cleanse myself in a deep
  32.         clear pool. it's the heat that
  33.         makes me think these things, these
  34.         incoherent ramblings of a woman
  35.         who loathes all that she is and
  36.         all that she ever was.

  38.         the heat feels like a pulse. a
  39.         constant beat that reverberates
  40.         through my brain and rocks my
  41.         soul with it's eternal and
  42.         relentless hum. it never lessens,
  43.         never fades. the heat is like
  44.         the razor that i once used to
  45.         tease my flesh, sharp and bright.
  46.         the heat is even a little like
  47.         a love i once had, an immersion
  48.         so complete and strong that i
  49.         thought it would never end.

  51.         there is something good about the
  52.         heat. it goes away, it fades
  53.         gently into crisp air and cool
  54.         colors, kind of like the soft
  55.         shuddering end of an orgasm,
  56.         when the pulse finally ceases.
  57.         i like the cold. death is cold.
  58.         the heat reminds me too harshly
  59.         that i am alive.
